The Pearl : Setting - Question & Answer

Many of the important events in the story, The Pearl, took place in La Paz. This is an ancient city situated at the southern end of the Baja Peninsula which is separated from mainland Mexico by the Gulf of California.

Kino’s people live and fish here. It is here that Kino’s young son, Coyotito, is stung by a scorpion. It is here that the doctor refuses to treat Kino’s son. It is also in La Paz that Kino finds the biggest pearl in the world. It iss also in La Paz that a few attempts are made to steal Kino’s pearl. La Paz is also the place where Kino kills a man who has tried to rob him and he has to flee because of it. The story also ends in La Paz when Kino comes back with his wife, Juana, and their dead baby, Coyotito. It is also in La Paz that Kino throws the accursed pearl back into the sea.
