Love and sacrifice are important themes in the novel The Prisoner of Zenda by Anthony Hope. Princess Flavia and Rassendyll love each other very much. However, they sacrifice that love for the sake of the King and the country.
There is also the love that the loyal subjects, Colonel Sapt and Fritz, have for their King. Despite the King’s weaknesses, the two men are even willing to die, to save the King and his throne because they love their King and country more than their lives. It is obvious that the characters in this novel are willing to give up a lot for the sake of what they believe is right.
Hope
Hope is a strong theme in the novel The Prisoner of Zenda. Colonel Sapt and Fritz hope that King Rudolf is still safe, although he has been captured by Duke Michael. This hope drives them to ask Rassendyll to return to Strelsau when they find out that the King has been captured by Black Michael. When three of the Famous Six come to Strelsau, Sapt and Fritz are full of hope that the King is still alive. Everything they do after that is based on that hope, the hope that they can rescue the King. That hope is finally rewarded when the King is rescued.
