‘You say that you never noticed it, then! They were very similar.’
And she smiled with a joy that was at once proud and ingenuous. Madame Forestier, deeply moved, took her hands.
‘Oh, my poor Mathilde! Why, my necklace was paste! It was worth at most only five
hundred francs!’

Based on the information in the extract, briefly describe what happened in the above incident.
Mathilde had bought a diamond necklace for Madame Forestier, as Mathilde had lost the one she had borrowed. Now, after some years, Madame Forestier tells her that the necklace was only a fake.
