The Road Not Taken - More Analysis

"The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost is one of his most famous poems. It urges the reader to "take the road less traveled" when making a decision, and be unafraid of taking a chance.

The poem is split into four stanzas, each with five lines. In the first, we meet a traveler on a country road who is standing at a fork. He is trying to decide which path to take, and he looks down one to where it bends around back into the trees.

In the second stanza, the traveler decides to take the second road. He makes the decision because the path he takes is grassier and hasn't seen many other travelers, but on second look he realizes that actually both paths have seen about the same amount of travelers.

In the third stanza, he says that neither has actually seen any travelers yet that day, and he knows because the leaves on the path are still fresh and not yet turned black because of people walking on them. So, he says, he continues down the path, and even though he tells himself he'll be back someday to try the other path, he knows that it'll be doubtful that he'll ever return.

In the fourth and last stanza, he describes how he'll probably end up telling this story sometime far, far into the future when he is much older and long past making this decision. But the key, he says, is in the decision that he made. He "took the road less traveled by, and that has made all the difference."
